Topics include equations and inequalities; linear, quadratic, polynomial, exponential and logarithmic functions; and systems of linear equations. Business applications are stressed. Prerequisite: Placement Test or Math 96 (formerly 112) or equivalent.

Please be aware that Math 124 is very similar to Math 126.  In Math 126 we discuss some concepts in more depth, and your Chapter 1 not at all. Math 126 is for students who will eventually take the Calculus sequence. Math 124 is for students who just need to fulfill a university core requirement or a major requirement, but do not need to take Calculus. You will not get dual credit for Math 126 and Math 124. The most you can get is 3 credits.

You will be encouraged to investigate and analyze mathematical concepts, and to become an independent and responsible learner. You will become familiar with technology tools used in mathematics, science, and engineering to be prepared for 21st century workforce demands. In addition, you will be expected to acquire the following skills:

• Solve equations and inequalities.

• Graph linear, exponential, polynomial, absolute value, square root, piece-wise defined, rational, and logarithmic functions.

• Analyze properties of functions.

• Solve systems of linear equations in two and three variables using the substitution, addition, and matrix method.

• Apply and extend all concepts.

A scientific calculator is necessary.  You can also use a graphing calculator. It is up to you to know how your calculator operates.  Here are some fine choices for under $20 with two display lines for easy input.

Please do not be surprised about the workload.   In all probability, it will be greater than you may have experienced in classroom-based courses. You will generally learn two new concepts a week.  Reading and understanding each concept is expected to require a minimum of 3-4 hours per week. Doing your homework to reinforce each concepts will take another 3-4 hours per week.   Therefore, in an average week you will have to spend a minimum of 12-16 hours on this course.

Waiting until the last minute to complete assignments will cause serious problems for you sooner or later, probably sooner. So begin right now to make a commitment, a contract with yourself, to keep up with the course work.   Set aside at least 2 hours per day to devote to your studies.  Find a quiet room in your home, close the door, and tell your family and friends to leave you alone during your study periods.

It is highly recommended that you have your own IBM-compatible computer.  Students who plan on using the CSN computer lab may be at a disadvantage because of possible access problems. Most students in the past, who have tried to finish this course on a work or school computer, have given up because of the sometimes impossible task of having the course readily available. Also, you must have Internet access in place, and you must be quite tech-savvy!

The course begins promptly on the first day of session.  Please check your schedule of classes to find the exact day.  I will not accept the excuse that you did not know when to start.  You must have Internet access in place at that time.  You must log on by the end of the first week, June 15th.

Step 1. Login at coursecompass.com

• Read the current  assignment. Practice the assignment problems.  The homework must be completed at 90% mastery level before the quiz will be released.  The program has video, step-by-step problems and animations.  Completing 90% mastery will be easier than you think.

• Take the quizzes.  4 sections and 2 quizzes a week.  You may take each quiz twice.  Try your best on each homework and quiz.  

• Take the practice test/review.  MyMathLab will identify where you need help and devise a plan to help you achieve success. 

CSN Tutorial Services are also available, if necessary.  Read about the free online tutoring through Smarthinking Live Tutoring. 

• Complete the quiz or quizzes pertaining to the current assignment.  You will find the  quizzes in coursecompass. You must submit the quiz by the due date to get credit. The due date for each quiz is on the respective assignment page which can be accessed Quiz menu.   The quiz average counts for 20% of your final course grade. There is one extra credit quiz.  I will post information about the extra credit after the second test. I drop the lowest quiz score. You can view your quiz, correct answers, solutions and grades in myMathLab Grades.

Step 2.

• Take your tests on the dates listed in the course schedule.  There will be 2 tests including a  final exam.   Each will be worth 40% of your total grade.  No make-up tests will be allowed except for very unusual circumstances.  I will decide on an individual basis!  Documentation might be required to support why you were not able to take the test on the date listed.  The test average counts for 80% of your final course grade.   If you have questions about a grade you MUST ask within 14 days.  No grade changes will be made at a later date.

1.   Students who live in the CSN Service Area MUST take their tests either on the CSN Henderson Campus or at one of the CSN Rural Centers. West Charleston or Cheyenne are NOT rural areas. Pahrump, Beatty, Tonopah are rural areas.   NO EXCEPTIONS! 

Be aware that you might have to make work arrangements to be able to take the tests. This is a transferable course.  I need to know that academic integrity is honored.  Many of you will have to take more rigorous courses in your future.

GRADING SCALE: 

The grade 'W' will NOT be given by me.  It is up to you to drop the course by the official drop date. See your schedule of classes or the CSN Web Site for official dates. July 5th is the official drop date for this six-week course.  If you forget to drop then you will get the appropriate grade earned in the course.  The registrar will tell you I can give you a W. I will not since it is your responsibility. 

I will post test, the quiz average, and the final grade in the Grade Book, which you can find in CourseCompass.
